Art cinemaWHITE MOSS (White Yagel) Genre: A Psychological Drama Duration: 98 minutes
The older the man is the more precious his past is to him. The older the nation is the more important is to the nation to understand its place in our confused modern world. The film story develops in Tundra, which - with its storms, frost, deer and dogs, smoking tops of chums (skin tents) and deer relays running in white haze – gives a unique opportunity to create an unsurpassable visual line of the film. Nenets is one of most ancient ethnicities populating the live, picturesque, loud, and severe Tundra. So much different from people living on the mainland, this strong and extraordinary ethnic group is capable of providing sharp characters brimming with inner dignity. At a quick glance, main film characters are men possessing brightest indigenous features of the Nenets ethnicity. Vannu, Seberuy, Khasava and Alyoshka are four men of different generations. The storyline is based on their complicated relations, on continuity and denial of traditions, elders’ resistance to novelties coming from the mainland, and, to all intents, this is the film about LOVE. It is about faithfulness, torments, jealousy and finding love for the purpose of continuation of their kind. …The local camp is preparing for a wedding, if it can be called a wedding in Nenets traditions. There are no guests, no closest or distant relatives, no feast, no songs, no smiles. The bride arrives to the groom’s camp without any attributes of a celebration. Young Alyoshka marries because his mother insists – the chum should not go vacant, the family should not die out. His heart though longs for Aniko, the daughter of old Seberuy. Ten years ago Aniko left the camp for the mainland. Every day Alyoshka checks the road hopelessly waiting for his love to return. He wants to tell his mother to take the bride back where she belongs. She would return a virgin. But the mother takes side of his young wife. The whole camp expects him to take care of his young wife. He feels alienated from his home. On both sides of the fireplace there are his mother and his wife, sitting strong like heavy stones on both sides of the river. Alyoshka feels lifeless and hollow. They spend nights in their own worlds. His young wife is like a flower brought to a cold chasm by fate. He is tormented in his own nightmarish world. Aniko is calling him to her world, where he longs to be for a long time without a moment’s hesitation. He dreams of their children’s games, first thrilling touches. He feels as if he lost the most important thing in his life. …One day, as he hears a merry laughter and a casual and quiet talk of his mother and wife, as if two rivulets poured into a bigger river, Alyoshka feels hollow again. He feels useless to this world. And he feels a new thrill. Suddenly, he opens a new truth, a new earthly and secure love. One may think that in this seemingly simple storyline one could only find melodramatic elements. However, the film is rich spiritually and socially due to the characters whom we named MAIN characters in the beginning. The generation gap between fathers and children, especially brutal and perverse in modern times, denial of ancestors’ rules and traditions are the evil, noiselessly advancing, visible in specifics and generalities, in the tragedy of the small people and the tragedy of the mankind. Unusually colourful images and emotions filling Vannu’s, Seberuy’s and Khasava’s lives’ events, will undoubtedly attract viewers. “Ignoring looking at the children, without saying anything to them, Khasava stepped out from the home. He called a dog and slowly walked to the deer… He tried to hunt down young deer that spring. Some deer are not familiar to him… He took care of the shameful debt of his father. Each time he heard himself shouting in his mind: “You are our father! You owe it to us! You owe it to us!” Emotionally as strong as the previous scene, but a dynamically different event is old Seberuy’s renunciation of his daughter Aniko. All of these events are like separate stories of deception. Ultimately, - deception of LOVE, of its highest essence. Uniqueness of characters, an indigenous palette of colours, a severe simplicity of gender relationships, the beauty of Tundra: inevitably igniting the urge for the family line continuity and glorifying the omnipresent LOVE are the positive standards, which present-day questioning viewers are searching for. We are sure the viewers will find them in White Yagel.
